Who is CSP?

We are a parent-run, not-for-profit organisation whose continued operation depends on enrolment fees and fundraising. We have been running since the early 1980’s, and are registered members of Playgroup Victoria.

What does ‘structured playgroup’ mean?

A structured playgroup is different from a parent-led playgroup. At CSP, our early-childhood experienced playgroup leader sets up and provides open-ended play activities prior to families arriving. All you have to do is turn up and enjoy the space, the activities and a cup of tea/coffee while connecting with your child and chatting to other parents and carers if you wish to do so. The playgroup leader also leads singing and stories on the mat, which is many kids’ highlight of the morning! After the session, the playgroup leader cleans up so you can leave whenever is best for you and you child(ren).

Why join CSP?

Our Playgroup nurtures the well-being of both adults and children in a safe and supportive environment. It's a wonderful place for each person's unique contribution to be respected, acknowledged and appreciated. It’s a great place to connect with your child(ren) and get to know other local families.

Playgroup encourages children to learn and develop through play, offering play experiences that are:

  • Child-centred

  • Non-competitive

  • Supportive of shared play

  • Fun for all, including babies

  • Focused on building skills and self-esteem

  • Self-expressive through art, crafts and construction

  • Supportive of all stages of language and motor skill development

  • A balanced range of experiences from which children can choose freely

What does my enrolment fee cover?

CSP is a not-for-profit organisation that’s run by a volunteer committee of parents. Unlike other church-run or government-funded playgroups we don’t receive ongoing funding or sponsoring, so our continued operation depends solely on enrolment fees and fundraising. Your enrolment fee covers our experienced playgroup leader’s remuneration, rent paid to Ashburton Uniting Church, arts/crafts expenses, running costs such as website fees, and daily expenses such as coffee/tea etc.

What does a Playgroup session look like?

For a detailed overview of our sessions, check out our Sessions page.

What do I bring to playgroup?

  • A nut-free snack or lunch. We also kindly request that sweets, cakes, biscuits, chips etc. are avoided except on birthdays and other special events. Please note: The hall is NOT a nut free environment, as the hall is used by other groups that are unable to adhere to this policy.

  • Change of clothes and nappies/wipes as required.

  • Hat and sunscreen during terms 1 & 4.

  • Jacket/warm clothing during terms 2 & 3.

How many sessions can we enrol in?

Assuming there are spaces available, as many as you like!

Do you have a waiting list?

Spaces are capped for each session to ensure quality play and activity time for all children. Some sessions can fill up quickly and this can mean it is necessary to have a waiting list. However, we can often fit you into the session of your choice.

Can my Mothers Group join Playgroup?

Yes, absolutely! Playgroup is an ideal place for mothers groups to meet: great toys and activities for the kids, and time for parents to chat and enjoy a cuppa. Best of all, no one has to clean the house before and after you meet!

Do you have a SunSmart policy?

CSP has an established sun smart policy. Please provide your child with a hat and apply sunscreen prior to arriving at Playgroup, especially during terms 1 & 4.

What if my child becomes sick?

In order to prevent cross infection, please don’t attend if your child is showing signs of illness such as fever, respiratory symptoms, vomiting, diarrhoea, conjunctivitis, etc. There is no need to let us know if you can’t make it.
